Easter Eve

Easter Eve: between the crucifixion and the resurrection. There is a tradition that Jesus, ‘descended to the dead’ and liberates those trapped in hell. I found a lovely cartoon of Jesus walking down a spiral staircase, it is dark at the bottom and light further up the stairs, but Jesus is walking down with a paintbrush in hand, painting ‘way out’ arrows on the wall.

I called to you, O God, out of my distress
and you answered me;
out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
and you heard my voice

Jonah 2:2

In the darkness of distress… perhaps the only image worth sharing today is the blackness as we wait for the joy of Easter morning…

A black void, square of black

In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Benedictus

The cartoon is in a book called “Good Goats: Healing our image of God” by Dennis Linn, Sheila Fabricant Linn and Matthew Linn, with illustrations by Francisco Miranda
